A senior living community is basically an apartment complex, housing complex, or other housing facility designed exclusively for senior adults; however, senior home services are sometimes available at some communities, while others provide limited assistance to those who want to live there. An assisted living community can either be privately owned, managed by a nonprofit agency, or rented out by a government agency, among others.

Senior citizens are those people who can no longer manage to work on their own, or who have no family to support them financially. They need assistance in planning their lifestyle, in caring for their health, in managing finances, in having enough food to eat, in paying their mortgages, in managing their taxes, and in looking after their personal hygiene. Senior homes offer these services for senior citizens.

Senior homes provide elder care services for senior citizens, such as housekeeping services, laundry facilities, meal service, shopping, medical and dental care, etc. The facilities offered at a senior living community also include recreational activities, such as swimming pools, fitness centers, saunas, etc. They also have 24-hour medical services that can be reached at any time of the day or night. Most community programs include the following:

The senior citizen also receives a certain amount of money each month, depending on the senior's income. This money is given for things such as meals, clothing, health care, household needs, utilities, and other expenses. The money is given by the government and does not have to be paid back; it just stays in the community until the senior citizen can afford to pay back the money.

The senior citizen has to complete a form when they first move to the community, in order to determine if they qualify for senior home services. Once they are found eligible, they will then be able to rent an apartment in the community, which is usually located near the center of the town or city where they live. Senior home services may also cover all the costs of the senior citizen's mortgage on their home, as well as any repairs to the home. However, these are not considered part of the senior citizen's rental expenses and so are not included in their budget. Some senior communities only offer housing services, while others will provide all of the above mentioned services. There are many senior community options that can be found online, so that the senior citizen looking for a senior living community can research on their own and choose one that is most suitable for them.
